Antonio Salvi’s Arminio is one of the best-loved operatic librettos of the Baroque period. Set against the historical background of the 'Battle of the Teutoburg Forest'. 9 AD. , in which the Cherusci leader Arminius inflicted a devastating defeat on the Romans, the opera centers around disputes between the Chatti and the Cherusci. At the opening of Handel 's opera, Arminius - known as the 'liberator of Germany' - has married the daughter of his arch-enemy Segestes.
