Andrea Gabrieli's Battaglia comes from the second book of the Concerti di Andrea et di Giovanni Gabrieli, published in Venice in 1587. It is one of the most varied and colourful of the many battle pieces of the Renaissance, with much word-painting. There is some common material with Janequin's La guerre, which seems to be the central piece in the whole battaglia repertoire. Though Gabrieli does not divide the eight parts neatly into two choirs, there is a great deal of antiphony between different four-part groupings, sometimes to considerable effect, as in the emphasis on "a not" towards the end of the seconda parte. As a reading of the text makes clear, the prima parte calls our attention to the fact that there is a battle going on, while the seconda parte is a call to arms. The whole piece is very theatrical, and may have been composed for some kind of dramatic entertainment. The seconda parte stands up well on its own, and can be effectively performed without the opening section.

É uma das mais variada e colorida das muitas peças de batalha da Renascença, com muita palavra-pintura. Há algum material comum com La guerre de Janequin, o que parece ser a peça central em todo o repertório Battaglia.
