Consisting of Prologue, Introduction, and six variations, this suite traces the history of the famous Advent melody from its origins in twelfth-century chant through its manifestations in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Selected movements may serve as voluntaries, hymn introductions, accompaniments, and versets. The final movement, in six-eight meter, brings the suite to a rollicking conclusion.
