Silent Durations I was written for the French piano vituoso Catherine Schneider. After a while I took the DAT, sat down at the piano, started the recorder and played exactly what I wanted. After ten minutes I listened to the playback and liked what I heard. The transcribed version of this improvisation became the first movement of Silent Durations I. Later I added a second and third movement. While playing I had the sensation that my hands would find their way to the piano when they wanted and I did my best to avoid imposing when they should play.
